United States President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani sat down at the White House on Friday, and despite weeks filled with harsh remarks the two leaders expressed their optimism for a more collaborative working relationship.
In a press conference following the private session, Trump described the gathering as “great” and “very productive,” noting that they share one goal in common: to make New York City thrive. He applauded the victory of Mamdani’s presidential campaign and promised to be supportive of, not defy the incoming Mayor.
Mamdani was a strong voice in the spirit of unification, describing the gathering as one based on “shared admiration and love” for New York. The two focused on pressing issues such as housing affordability, rent, groceries, and utilities–challenges affecting millions across the city.
When confronted about their differences particularly in the area of issues of immigration Mamdani said she was hopeful for the continued cooperation. Trump also laughed at the time Mamdani addressed criticism from the past in a way that said it’s “easier than explaining it.”
The meeting represented a major change in the tone. A few months ago, Trump had publicly attacked Mamdani’s political beliefs, and Mamdani had criticized the Trump administration. Yet, when they left the Oval Office on Friday, both men expressed a genuine desire to cooperate in order to ease the city’s high cost of living.
