Sam Curran’s Hat-Trick Sends Strong T20 World Cup Signal as England Beat Sri Lanka

Friday night brought good news for England ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup when Sam Curran ripped through Sri Lanka with a breathtaking performance in Pallekele. With the big event just around the corner, his remarkable hat-trick crushed the opposition while showing how sharp England are becoming on Asian pitches. Though tension usually builds near tournament start dates, this win poured confidence into the camp. Instead of tentative steps, they took firm strides forward under the lights. Momentum matters most at moments like these – and Curran handed them plenty.

One England man in white has now joined another after taking three wickets in one match, a mark hit before by Chris Jordan at the last global tournament. This flash of brilliance belonged to Curran, a doer with both bat and ball from Surrey, stepping into rare air when it mattered most. The moment stood out, sharp and sudden, just as the team shapes its choices before the next big challenge begins.

Curran Flips the Script

Fifty-two runs came fast – twenty-eight balls worth – as Nissanka and Mendis settled into stride. Halfway through the innings, momentum sat firmly with Sri Lanka. Seven overs passed, one wicket down, seventy-six on the board. A solid base had formed by then. The home side saw room to push higher.

England’s bowlers tightened their grip, mixing smart changes with steady control. Then came the shift – Curran tore through Sri Lanka’s tail in the 16th, one wicket after another collapsing on each ball.

A mis-hit by Sri Lanka’s skipper, Dasun Shanaka, found mid-off without fuss. Right after, Maheesh Theekshana lifted one only to land it neatly into a fielder’s hands at long-on. Out of nowhere, Matheesha Pathirana stood stunned – the off-stump crashing down from a sharp in-swinger that spun the game on its head.

Three for thirty eight was Curran’s tally, yet what he did couldn’t be measured by scorecards alone. From looking strong, Sri Lanka suddenly crumbled, all out at one hundred thirty three. Their last four batters fell in quick succession, adding merely four runs between them.

“One of Those Nights You’ll Always Remember”

Fresh off a costlier-than-expected debut, Curran leaned into the disorder of T20 play once the game got going.

“It’s pretty cool to say I’ve got a hat-trick,” he admitted. “T20 is such an up-and-down game. Early on, I would have taken any wicket or even a dot ball.”

A quick chat with Jos Buttler helped shape the moment, said the England all-rounder. From around the wicket, aiming straight at the stumps – that choice tipped the balance. Bright bails flying added spark to what already felt like a win.

A fresh moment of magic from Curran only deepens what’s already clear – he fits tightly into England’s shorter formats, particularly when the pressure climbs in tournaments.

Spin Chokes Sri Lanka

Curran stole the show, yet it was England’s spin duo who set things up without fuss. Through tight lines and sharp changes of pace, Rashid kept the squeeze on. Dawson followed close behind, mixing flight and dip to unsettle the order. One after another, batters fell across five straight overs. With no breathing room allowed, Sri Lanka could never shift gears.

A few quick bursts of defiance came from Shanaka, hitting two big shots – one right at Jofra Archer, back from a spell on the sidelines – yet England kept their grip without losing rhythm.

Phil Salt leads the chase

Faster than expected, Phil Salt set the tone for England with a sharp start. Off the first ball he faced, a six cleared the rope off Theekshana. Right after came two fours in a row, one slicing wide, the next driven clean through cover. Momentum shifted before Sri Lanka could settle into their lines. Calm spread across the innings, built on that initial spark.

Fate smiled on the 29-year-old after three missed opportunities, yet he turned it around with a smooth 46 up front. From there, Tom Banton stepped in – not flashy, just steady, his 29 keeping things calm when momentum could’ve slipped.

A single wicket for Sri Lanka’s quick, Pathirana – just 18 runs given up – still wasn’t enough. The score they set felt light. England strolled past it without strain, opening their account in the three-game contest.

A Headline Before the World Cup

Not just about victory, the way they played meant more. With an eye on spin-heavy pitches ahead at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup group phase, England saw proof here – piece by piece, their mix is finding shape. Though quiet in moments, the outcome echoed louder than runs alone.

Right when it matters most, Curran seems to be tapping back into his top-level rhythm. Ever since coming back into the national team lately, he’s played with sharper belief, flashes of imagination, a clearer sense of direction.

Winning every time they’ve faced Sri Lanka since 2016, England has taken victory in nine straight T20s. With two more games ahead at Pallekele, their run could grow even longer. Though records matter little once the match begins, momentum tends to linger when routines stay sharp.

As Curran summed it up, “Winning becomes a habit. We’re building confidence at the right time, and hopefully we’ll be as ready as we can be when the World Cup starts.”

England saw it differently. Especially Curran. This moment carried weight he could feel in his bones
