Actor Ranveer Singh apologized publicly after a storm of criticism broke out due to his remarks regarding Chamundadevi in the ceremony that ended the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa. The controversy started when he referred to an action scene from Kantara Chapter 1, produced by Rishab Shetty -and misinterpreted the godlike person in the form of a “female ghost.” He also reenacted the scene on stage, praise for Shetty’s performance.
A community group, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has filed an official complaint, claiming the comments slammed religious sentiments in calling a deity revered ghost. They also demanded an apology from the public.
When he apologized, posted on social media, Ranveer said his intent was to merely be grateful for Shetty’s behavior, and not to violate anyone’s religious opinions. He expressed his appreciation for all traditions and cultures and offered his sincere apology to those who were hurt by his comments.
The incident occurs just a few days before the release date of Ranveer’s new film Dhurandhar creating the pressure and unwelcome attention the film’s promotional campaign.
