Nitish Kumar Stakes Claim to Form New Bihar Government, Oath Ceremony Tomorrow

Nitish Kumar has officially met Bihar Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and staked his claim to form the next state government after a strong performance in last week’s assembly elections. He will take oath as Chief Minister once again on Thursday at 1.30 pm.

A total of 22 ministers are expected to be sworn in along with him. The ceremony is likely to be a major political event, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all BJP-ruled state chief ministers expected to attend. The presence of both the Prime Minister and Nitish Kumar on the same stage is being seen as a significant message about the stability of the BJP-JDU alliance.

Out of the 22 ministers, nine are expected to be from the BJP, including outgoing deputy chief ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha, and former deputy CM Renu Devi. Eight of these nine were part of the previous cabinet as well.

The cabinet is also likely to include one representative each from ally parties — Chirag Paswan’s LJPJitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM, and Upendra Kushwaha’s RLM. The LJP in particular had an impressive run, winning 19 out of the 28 seats it contested.

With the JD(U) returning as the dominant partner in the alliance, the party is expected to keep 10 ministerial positions, eight of which were held by members of the outgoing government.

Once sworn in, Nitish Kumar will begin his 10th term as Chief Minister. He is already among the longest-serving chief ministers in India, and if he completes this term, he will surpass former Sikkim CM Pawan Chamling’s record of 24 years in office.

The BJP-led NDA secured a sweeping victory in the Bihar election, winning 202 out of 243 seats. In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan — consisting of the RJD, Congress, VIP, and Left parties — managed only 35 seats, a sharp fall from its 2015 performance.

Meanwhile, political strategist-turned-leader Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party made its electoral debut but failed to open its account, winning zero out of 238 seats contested. Kishor, however, said he will continue on his political journey.
