Indian Cricket Team Offers Prayers at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Ahead of 5th T20I vs New Zealand

Just past practice, some players from India’s cricket squad entered the aged Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram that Friday morning. When light touched the spire’s peak, they arrived too, seeking quiet before facing New Zealand. Though matches roar with sound, this moment stayed soft – focused on reflection, not shouts. The streets hummed nearby; however, the temple remained steady, shaped by centuries and untouched by rush. Footsteps neared, each one pulling silence tighter. Plans existed, yes – yet instinct bent them sideways into something freer.

By nearly nine fifteen, fog draped close to the ground as a handful of Indian cricketers reached an old temple – Suryakumar Yadav among them, silent like the others, witnesses said. They’d landed in Kerala the day before, tires hitting runway concrete on January twenty-ninth.

The team stepped out looking like pilgrims, Axar Patel moving sure-footed through every spot on the field. Behind him trailed Rinku Singh and Varun Chakravarthy, picked mostly for their hard hitting. Alongside them appeared Kuldeep Yadav together with Ravi Bishnoi, bowlers known to curve deliveries in flight. Nearby paced T Dilip, the man refining how players sprint between creases.

A third of an hour slipped by within the broad temple grounds as rituals moved toward the main event. Beneath engraved archways, ancient pathways twist without sound but for murmured songs. From distant hamlets they arrive, pulled by tales that predate remembering. Near broken figures, flames flicker from small oil lights while some rest motionless on faded stairs. This place holds quiet honor not from words but years. Whoever walks south will mention it among holy ground.

By Saturday, it is New Zealand stepping into Greenfield International Stadium against India for the fifth T20I. This ground hasn’t seen an Indian team since they met Australia back in November 2023.

Three wins straight gave India an edge in the T20I series. Still, a big loss in the fourth game broke their flow, especially after dark in Visakhapatnam. The visitors found reason to celebrate because of that result.

Putting up 215 after choosing to bat, New Zealand made things tough right away in the fourth T20I. Off to a solid start were openers Tim Seifert and Devon Conway, building momentum quickly. India struggled to settle into any kind of flow while chasing, even though they pushed through. Scoring 65, Shivam Dube held his ground longer than most, still falling short when it mattered. Fifty runs separated the sides at the finish, making the outcome feel one-sided. Victory settled firmly in New Zealand’s hands by the final over.

A quiet habit shows itself whenever India’s team halts as one. Before the fourth T20I began, they made their way to the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. Earlier on this tour, similar pauses broke the rhythm – Gautam Gambhir walked through Mahakaleshwar, after that Kalkaji. Not planned at once, but pieces of something repeated each time.

Falling into place just as India gears up for the 2026 T20 World Cup, set to begin on February 7, this tournament takes on extra meaning. Not only are they playing at home – sharing hosting duties – but expectations climb because they carry the title from last time around.

Behind schedule compared to the USA, India kicks off its World Cup journey in Group A with Pakistan, then Namibia, later the Netherlands. After wrapping up the latest T20I series versus New Zealand, a steady finish could spark something subtle before the big stage.
