This Ally Strongly Supports India’s UNSC Bid With Veto Power; Will The Dream Finally Come True?

France has once again come out strongly in favour of India securing a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), this time explicitly supporting New Delhi’s inclusion with full veto power. The backing is significant, especially as discussions on global governance reforms gain new momentum.

In a detailed statement issued on November 19, the French government reiterated its long-standing position on expanding the UNSC to better represent today’s geopolitical realities. France emphasised that the structure of the Security Council no longer reflects the balance of power in the modern world and requires a major overhaul.

According to France, India — along with the other G4 nations (Japan, Germany and Brazil) — deserves a permanent seat because of its growing global responsibilities, economic strength and active role in international peacekeeping. “Each member of the Group of Four – Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan – should receive one seat each, reflecting their responsibilities on the global stage. Each of these countries should be granted the privileges associated with this status, particularly veto power, in line with the spirit of our Charter,” the French government said.

France also stressed the urgent need for Africa’s representation, noting the continent’s massive population and its rising importance in global affairs. It called for two permanent seats for Africa, highlighting that many of today’s peace and security challenges directly involve African nations.

Why France’s Support Matters

France is one of the five permanent UNSC members (P5), and any reform to grant new permanent seats requires P5 approval. Its unequivocal support for India — especially with veto rights — strengthens India’s case significantly.

For years, India has argued that as the world’s largest democracy, a major economic power, and one of the biggest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, it deserves a voice at the top decision-making table.

Will the UNSC Reform Actually Happen?

Despite strong support from France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and increasingly many African nations, UNSC reform remains a slow-moving process. The biggest hurdles are:

  • Lack of consensus among all P5 members
  • Differences within regional blocs
  • Concerns about veto expansion

However, France’s clear push — especially mentioning veto rights — marks a crucial step forward and adds pressure on other permanent members to take a definitive stance.

India’s Long-Standing Demand Gains Momentum

India has repeatedly underscored that the existing UNSC structure is outdated. With France now publicly reinforcing its support once again, the momentum toward reform appears stronger than ever.

The big question now is whether this will finally translate into action — and whether India’s long-awaited dream of becoming a permanent UNSC member with veto power will soon become a reality.
