Dipu Chandra Das Lynched in Bangladesh Over Blasphemy Rumour, No Evidence Found

A shocking mob violence incident has been a source of shock for Bangladesh after a 25-year old Hindu person, Dipu Chandra Das, was brutally beaten in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka region over claims of blasphemy. These claims are being investigated by investigators who claim are not supported by any concrete evidence.

Dipu Chandra Das who was employed at an apparel factory in the region, was brutally murdered in the early hours of Friday evening after there was speculation that he made derogatory comments regarding Islam. According to authorities investigating the incident, there is no evidence that has been identified to confirm that Das said anything of the sort.

No Proof, No Witnesses

A senior officer of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Bangladesh’s counterterrorism force, told local newspaper The Daily Star that investigators found no evidence linking Das to any blasphemous activity, either online or offline.

“There is no indication that he wrote anything on Facebook or made any remarks that hurt religious sentiments,” said RAB Company Commander Md Samsuzzaman. “Local residents and his colleagues have also stated that they neither heard nor saw him say anything of that sort.”

The officer added that no individual has claimed firsthand knowledge of Das committing blasphemy, raising serious questions about how a rumour escalated into deadly violence.

Rumour Sparks Mob Fury

According to local media reports, a rumour alleging that Das had insulted Prophet Muhammad spread rapidly among factory workers, triggering outrage. As tensions escalated, workers reportedly demanded his dismissal.

Alamgir Hossain, the factory’s floor in charge, told Prothom Alo that management tried to defuse the situation. “The labourers demanded that Das be sacked. A mob gathered outside the factory. To control the situation, we relieved him of his duties. We tried to save him, but the situation became extremely volatile,” he said.

In an attempt to protect the factory premises, Das was pushed outside, where the mob attacked him.

Brutal Lynching and Shocking Aftermath

The mob slayed Das by using sticks, and locally-made weapons before hanging him from a tree in the middle of the highway between Dhaka and Mymensingh. His body was burned to the ground as witnesses captured the horror and chanted slogans. The footage later were shared on social media which sparked widespread anger.

The authorities have stated that at most 10 people have been detained as of now in connection with the murder.

Government Condemnation

The Bangladesh interim government, headed by the Chief advisor Muhammad Yunus, strongly condemned the execution of a lynch mob and promised to take swift punishment for those accountable.

“We are adamantly against the killing of the Hindu male in Mymensingh. There is no room for this kind of violence in the current Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this horrific act will be protected,” the Chief Advisor’s office stated in an announcement.

The incident has rekindled fears about mob justice, religious intolerance and the reverberation of unchecked rumors, which has underscored the need for greater law enforcement and protections against violence in the communal setting.
