Delhi’s Air Quality Remains in Severe Category for Third Consecutive Day; Dense Smog Disrupts Daily Life and Air Traffic

New Delhi, December 15th, 2025 The capital city of India continues to be plagued by hazardous pollution levels on the Monday, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) continued to be within the “severe” category for the third consecutive day. Smog was a constant menace to large portions of the city as well as its surrounding areas, drastically making it difficult to see and triggering health warnings and travel advisories from the authorities. According to official statistics and monitoring of environmental issues that monitored air pollution, levels remained extremely high in a variety of places throughout Delhi which caused an unwelcome feeling among the residents and disrupting the normal flow of things, such as flight schedules.

The data from monitoring of air quality systems revealed that various stations in Delhi registered AQI levels that were close to the upper limit of 500 during the early morning hours of Monday. Some of the most affected regions are Ashok Vihar, Jahangirpuri, Rohini and Wazirpur in which readings exceeded the threshold of cut-off, suggesting that the actual levels of pollution could be much more pronounced. In all this city’s AQI was recorded as 457 at 6 a.m. The visibility was greatly diminished by a thick pollution layer that covered a variety of areas.

Severe Pollution Across Multiple Localities

All across the capital city in the capital, almost all monitoring stations registered the air quality readings that fell in that “severe” or the high “severe-plus” classification, which indicates very unhealthy conditions. Alongside those stations with the highest scores at the 500-point limit in the city, other crucial places like Anand Vihar and North Campus have also recorded readings that are in the dangerous range. These results highlight the wide-ranging character of the quality of air issue which is currently impacting the city.

The weather has exacerbated the problem, due to the combination of cold temperatures and slow-moving winds that trap pollution closer to the ground. A winter-like weather system, along with the lack of atmospheric dispersion has prevented a significant improvement in the air quality. The thick smog isn’t just a concern for visibility, but also contributes to greater levels of particulate matter (PM2.5 as well as PM10) that cause serious health hazards.

Health Advisories and Public Impact

The declining quality of air has resulted in health advisories from both the government as well as medical experts. Residents have reported breathing difficulties eyes, irritation to the nose, and other discomforts that are a result of prolonged exposure to air pollution. People with a high risk of exposure, such as those with a disability, elderly people and those suffering from already-existing cardiovascular or respiratory illnesses are more at risk. Health authorities from the public sector have advised people to restrict their outdoor activities, use protective masks when outside, and to follow the guidelines of the government on limiting exposure to harmful particles.

Effect on Transport and Visibility

The increased visibility and the smog has impacted the transportation system especially air travel. Indira Gandhi International Airport as well as major airlines issued advisory to passengers about possible cancellations and delays to flights, because the dense fog impeded visibility of aircraft operations. Ground transportation also has experienced delays due to the dense smog that has affected visibility on the major roadways, impacting commute times and traffic flow.

The continual smog is leading to more widespread concerns from the community and many residents have expressed their displeasure with the frequent pollutant events that occur in conjunction with the seasonal weather patterns. Local environmental groups and advocacy groups as well as local advocates have urged more effective policy-based measures and more effective long-term plans to tackle the root reasons for pollution of the air within the region.

Government and Regulatory Response

To address the pollution crisis and the ongoing air quality crisis, authorities such as the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) along with other authorities have instituted steps that are graded to help in reducing pollution. These actions include limitations on construction activities, restrictions on traffic in the automobile as well as advisories to schools and businesses to alter their operations in order to limit the risks of exposure. Although certain regulations are implemented as part of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Officials are continuing to evaluate the situation and decide if additional measures are required.

Authorities have also stressed that weather conditions play an important influence on the persistent smog and pollution levels in the winter months. Experts say that if there aren’t any changes in the meteorological pattern, such as rain or wind speed and improvements in the quality of the air could be at a minimum in the short term.

Regional Air Quality Concerns

The neighboring regions of regions of the National Capital Region (NCR) which includes areas of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, have also been criticized for poor conditions for air, including smog negatively impacting the visibility and health of these regions. Fog conditions that were dense and dense exacerbated problems with air quality and led to advisory notices of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning about reduced visibility and advising citizens about the safety of their travels.

Although burning of agricultural stubble throughout the state has historically been a cause of Delhi’s pollution, experts have indicated that the current smog outbreak is more closely tied to local emissions sources and bad weather conditions, as burning activity decreases during the later part of the season.

Outlook and Continuous Monitoring

Experts in air quality remain vigilant to track real-time data and update their readers on the changing conditions. The forecasts indicate that if there aren’t any significant changes in the weather the city will remain in the extreme category for the foreseeable future. Environmental agencies and authorities are expected to remain vigilant and adapt their measures to the situation changes.

In the meantime residents are advised to stay updated by utilizing official air quality report channels and follow public health guidelines that aim to reduce exposure to dangerous air pollutant. Government agencies have emphasized that even though some mitigation measures are in place, lasting improvement will require a sustained set of policy changes and the cooperation of communities.

General Conditions at an A-Z

  • Numerous Monitoring stations throughout Delhi have reported readings of AQI at or near 500, which suggests high levels of pollution.
  • Visibility was significantly diminished by dense smog in a variety of locations.
  • Air travel advisories issued due to poor visibility.
  • Health warnings for exposure to the sun.
  • The weather continues to hinder improvements in the quality of air.

This report reflects the air quality issue facing the capital and the surrounding areas, as well as the effects on daily life as well as health and transportation infrastructure as assessed and reported by environmental authorities as well as monitoring information.
