6 Dead After Strong Earthquake Hits Bangladesh; Tremors Felt in Kolkata

A powerful 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook central Bangladesh on Friday morning, leaving at least six people dead and dozens injured, according to local media. The tremor was strong enough to be felt across West Bengal and parts of northeast India, triggering panic as people rushed out of homes and offices.

The quake struck around 10.38 am (local time), with the epicentre located in Ghorashal in Narsingdi district, nearly 25 km from Dhaka. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake at a shallow depth of 10 km.

Initial police statements confirmed three deaths, but Dhaka-based DBC Television later reported six fatalities in the capital. Three people were killed when parts of a building’s roof and wall collapsed, while three others died after being struck by falling railings. Many of the injuries occurred during panic-driven evacuations as buildings swayed sharply for several seconds.

Though northern and southeastern Bangladesh fall within known high-risk seismic zones due to the Indian–Eurasian plate collision, the central region where Friday’s quake occurred is usually considered less active.

Tremors Stir Panic in Kolkata

Residents in Kolkata, parts of West Bengal, and Assam’s Guwahati felt strong tremors, prompting people to gather on streets as a precaution. Social media posts described the jolt as brief but alarming. “Small quake but big panic,” wrote Kolkata resident Supratim Maitra on X.

Pakistan Records Separate Quake

In a separate event, Pakistan experienced a 3.9-magnitude earthquake on Thursday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, increasing the likelihood of aftershocks.

Experts note that shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, leading to stronger shaking.

Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India lie along one of the world’s most active seismic belts, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. The region regularly experiences moderate to strong earthquakes, often felt across multiple countries.
