Sunil Gavaskar’s Blunt Message to ICC After Pakistan Announce India Boycott at T20 World Cup 2026

Ex–India skipper Sunil Gavaskar fired a clear warning at the ICC after Pakistan declared it would miss its 2026 T20 World Cup game versus India, even while saying it plans to play in the event.

On Sunday, Pakistan’s government said the country’s male cricketers will join the 2026 T20 World Cup – yet skip any match versus India. Set to meet India’s squad under Suryakumar Yadav in Colombo come February 15, Islamabad now pulls back without warning. Reaction across the sport surges fast, questions swirling about how such events stay fair when politics steps onto the field.

Hardly seven days passed before news broke. This followed the ICC turning down Bangladesh’s plea to shift their T20 World Cup games from India – prompted when Mustafizur Rahman pulled out of the IPL. On that matter, Pakistan stood beside Bangladesh. Still, approval did not come. As a result, Scotland stepped into the schedule where Bangladesh once was.

Right afterward came Pakistan’s refusal to play India, something widely viewed as politics disguised as sport. Not holding back, Gavaskar insisted the ICC step in – strongly – to stop sudden pullouts from turning into habit across global matches.

“Definitely, I think if you withdraw at the last moment, that is an issue. If you withdraw earlier on, that’s another matter altogether. But if you withdraw on the eve of the tournament, then yes, I think certainly the ICC should come in and take some action,” Gavaskar told India Today.

The former opener emphasized that the ICC’s response should be decisive and serve as a deterrent for the future. “There are so many other boards involved, so it’s not just one person’s decision. However, it should be something that ensures no other team in the future also considers doing that,” he added.

Furious over Pakistan skipping games versus India, Gavaskar floated the idea of ICC lawyers stepping in. Outcome? Nobody knows for sure. Still, one thing stands – headquarters won’t just look away.

“The ICC will probably take legal action against Pakistan over the refusal to play against India, but what the result of such an action would be, I can’t say. It is certain that the ICC would be extremely displeased with this decision of the Pakistan government,” Gavaskar said.

Starting off strong, Pakistan finds itself grouped with India, plus Namibia, the United States, and Netherlands in Group A for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Should tensions lead to skipping the match against India, ripple effects might hit more than just tournament rankings – broadcast deals could wobble, sponsor plans may shift, while millions watching from home face disappointment. With eyes everywhere fixed on this showdown, any absence shakes things well beyond the field.

Odd twist in timing – Pakistan made its move just as their youth squad faced India in a key World Cup clash in Bulawayo. That day, sport drowned out tension, thanks to an overpowering display by India’s younger players. The pitch became neutral ground, where only runs and wickets mattered most.

Out in five eight, India’s under-nineteens sent Pakistan packing, ending their run while booking a spot against Afghanistan in the semis. Halfway through, when boundaries piled up and field placements shifted, the younger players played on – unstopped. Meanwhile, whispers grew louder about why older teams refuse matches just because of borders drawn long ago. Some say sport should stay clear of politics; others argue that silence speaks too. By evening light, scorecards told one story – the game went ahead – but headlines carried another tone entirely.

With the T20 World Cup drawing near, attention turns to the ICC and its next move. Because of what Gavaskar said, more people in cricket are starting to agree: clear rules matter, especially when the game’s reputation is at stake. How the sport handles interruptions could shape how it’s seen worldwide. Not everyone speaks up, yet the concern runs deep among those who play and watch. Now comes the moment for decisions that might define fairness for years ahead.
