Delivery Man Recounts Desperate Attempt to Save Noida Techie From Ditch

Saturday night turned grim when Yuvraj Mehta, a 27-year-old working in tech, died after his vehicle sank into a flooded hole near Sector 150 in Noida. As emergency crews faced delays getting close, a food delivery worker named Moninder jumped into icy water trying to pull him out. His effort brought attention to what went wrong – conditions possibly making escape impossible. The event left neighbors stunned, questions forming around safety in that stretch of road. Details remain unclear, yet one thing stands out – the risk taken by someone who acted fast but arrived just short.

According to Moninder, he arrived at the accident site around 1:45 am, shortly after Mehta’s car – a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara – had fallen into the pit dug for the basement of an under-construction building. “There was a lot of fog, and the vehicle missed the turn,” Moninder said. “The victim called his father, who immediately contacted the police. The police arrived quickly, and a fire brigade team followed about 20 minutes later.”

Moninder alleged that the rescue personnel initially hesitated to enter the water. “The team said it was a basement filled with iron rods, the water was extremely cold, and visibility was nearly zero. They feared getting into trouble,” he told reporters. “I saw that the boy was standing on the roof of his car, waving his phone’s torch, pleading for help – but no one went in to save him.”

Hesitation hung in the air – then Moninder moved. Out came his clothes, on went a safety jacket, a rope looped tight around his waist before he plunged into the water, he recalled. A similar incident struck just two weeks prior, when a truck driver got stuck there too. That time, rescue came through teamwork – ropes, a ladder, people stepping up without delay. Yet nothing changed after. No barriers appeared. No warnings were posted. Officials did not respond, even though danger clearly remained.

“I was later told that if help had arrived just ten minutes earlier, the techie could have been saved,” he said, his voice heavy with regret.

Fog hung thick that night, slowing everything down. Efforts to reach Mehta involved a crane, a ladder, some searchlights, even a boat thrown together on site. The police say they did what they could. Visibility dropped so low it nearly stopped movement altogether. Rescue work went on despite conditions nobody expected to be that bad. Mist rolled in hard, making signals weak and voices harder to trace. Rajeev Narayan Mishra pointed out each tool used, one after another. He stood by the actions taken through those long hours.

Five hours passed before they found Mehta’s body. Firefighters arrived early, followed by SDRF teams soon after. NDRF personnel combed through the wreckage alongside officers from the local police force. Efforts continued nonstop until the recovery was complete.

Speaking about his last conversation with his son, Yuvraj’s father, Raj Kumar Mehta, described the harrowing moments. “I spoke to him shortly before the accident. He said he was on his way home,” he recalled. “A little later, he called again, panicked, saying his car had fallen into a drain. He asked me to come immediately.”

Even after officers arrived, plus neighbors who rushed over, Raj Kumar Mehta claimed there was no way to help Yuvraj. What makes it harder for the family is not just loss – there’s frustration, too, mixed with doubt over whether anything at the building area had really been secured.

A single moment can change everything. Talk about safety at building sites is growing again after what happened. So are questions about how fast help arrives during crises. Moninder showed up without thinking twice, putting himself in danger trying to pull someone out. Officials still digging into details have not finished their work. Yet one thing stands clear – lives hang by threads more often than we admit. Some people move when fear freezes the rest.
