Virat Kohli Reclaims No. 1 Spot in Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, Displacing Rohit Sharma

Fresh on top of the ODI rankings, it was Virat Kohli who took the lead from Rohit Sharma after a fiery performance in Vadodara. Scoring 93 from just 91 balls, India’s chase found direction once again under pressure. New Zealand had posted 300 earlier, setting a stiff target by most standards. Yet calm shaped every move he made at the crease. Silence spread across the stands when dot balls piled up.

Then sudden eruption followed each boundary. One swing could shift everything. That balance – between patience and aggression – spoke louder than stats ever might.

At number one on the ICC’s ODI batting list, Kohli has stood eleven times. His journey began in October 2013 – quietly at first, later gaining rhythm. Over time, he stayed ahead more than any Indian before him: a full 825 days leading. Few have matched that persistence over such stretch. Just nine players worldwide have held the number one spot longer than that. Way ahead of them all is Vivian Richards, who stayed on top for more than two thousand days.

Suddenly, Kohli scored once more. Arriving in Vadodara, he already had heavy totals behind him – 74 not out, then a fiery 135, another hundred at 102, after that a solid 65. This steady flood of runs reveals what makes him indispensable up front. Just when India needs boundaries, his blade moves without delay. When pressure hits, it does not weigh him down – it wakes something up. Others on the team keep their eyes sharp, taking note every single time he steps toward the crease.

Even so, for Rohil Sharma, it was only a brief slip. After losing top spot, he slipped further – down to third – after scoring 26 in the opening ODI. Yet on that very field, New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell moved up, taking second place from third, powered by an 84 off 71 balls, highest in the match. At the front, the race remains tight: Kohli holds 785, Mitchell is right behind with one less, and Rohit follows at 775. A single big innings could shift everything once more.

A steady 29 runs without losing his wicket in Vadodara has lifted KL Rahul one position higher. Now eleventh in the ODI rankings, he moves past where he was just behind. Facing 21 deliveries with patience made the small jump possible. Deep within India’s batting order, his presence remains vital for strengthening longer innings. Small yet reliable efforts like this slowly influence how players are placed on match days.

Travis Head and Steven Smith Rise in Test Rankings

On the final day, Smith moved ahead with a smooth hundred, building on his strong showing in Sydney. Close behind, Head climbed to third through consistent fifties played out across different grounds. Root remains on top, his calm presence and smart choices between balls adding up over weeks. Brook keeps the second spot even though he wavered near the end; those fast starts earlier made the difference. When the series result was decided, focus turned here – to tallies shaped during long spells when shadows stretched and light grew thin.

Up jumps Jacob Bethell of England, leaping 25 places to land at 52 after scoring 154 in the second innings at SCG. His rise shows something clear – when performances glow under bright lights like the Ashes, rankings feel it too.

Who led Australia’s bowling charge? Mitchell Starc, with 31 wickets and a trophy for best performer. Because of those numbers, his ranking leapt from ninth to third – six spots higher than before. Scott Boland held firm in seventh place, steady as ever. Twenty wickets and consistent outings kept him there.

T20I Rankings Shift Once More

Not long ago, new numbers appeared in the men’s T20I standings. After taking five wickets during Sri Lanka’s series against Pakistan, Wanindu Hasaranga moved up – now second among bowlers. In reply, a half-century by Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan lifted him one spot higher, into fifth place for batters. What players do lately weighs heavily on where they stand. Every run, every dismissal, even in smaller contests, counts just the same to the ICC.

Top of the ODI rankings again, Kohli shows that lasting longer often beats shining brightest. It is not the score next to his name that catches attention, instead it is the quiet determination he showed when things went wrong. People recall tight matches, dramatic final overs – instances where a single innings shifted the balance completely.

There is something known in this comeback, almost like recognizing a beat that never really left, just waited for lights to blaze again. Others trail close behind, their names stacked beneath his on the ranking. Still, at this moment, each move he makes lands like it was meant to be there. Newer players pay attention – not out of duty – yet because his actions feel hard while looking effortless. Speed rules the sport, though a few adapt quicker than the chaos that swirls nearby.

Eyes stay fixed on the field while big names climb toward records future seasons might confirm. When runs count, Kohli stays steady – pressure barely leaves a trace. Over after over feels still until Rohil shifts gears without warning. Under glare of spotlight, players like KL Rahul and Daryl Mitchell stretch what they can do. It’s not only scores people recall, yet the way things play out – like stillness right before a hit to the edge, or how fans suddenly catch their breath. Progress comes slow, shaped by acts that stay long after results fade.
