BCCI Orders KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman for IPL 2026

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ordered the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to remove Bangladesh speedster Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. It was announced in the presence of BCCI director Devajit Saikia on Saturday, the BCCI secretary citing the recent events within Bangladesh as the main reason behind the change. Saikia also confirmed that KKR could be permitted to choose a replacement player when Rahman is declared free.

BCCI Statement on the Release

“Due to the recent events happening throughout this region, the BCCI have instructed KKR to let Mustafizur Rahman leave their squad. If the franchise wants the replacement of a player, the BCCI will approve it,” Saikia told the news agency.

Rahman was purchased by KKR in the mini-auction which took place in Abu Dhabi for INR 9.20 crore. The left-arm pacer drew a lot of interest and bidders included Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings also bidding KKR ultimately signed his services, and tagged his position as an important part of their bowling line-up to play in the IPL 2026.

Controversy Surrounding the Signing

The selection has caused controversy in India because of ongoing tensions between the two nations. The reports of violence involving Hindus in Bangladesh during the last couple of weeks have led to criticism of KKR’s decision not to keep Rahman as a player in their team.

Political leaders, including those from the BJP as well as Shiv Sena, voiced their displeasure and asked that the league reconsider its decision. BJP head Sangeet Som even called Shah Rukh Khan the co-owner of KKR the franchise, an “gaddar” (traitor) to sign an international player from Bangladesh amid the tense political environment.

Background of Tensions

The issue is connected to numerous incidents on violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and the latest loss of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh in the month of March. These incidents sparked a surge of the calls for Rahman’s expulsion from the IPL team.

Though the BCCI responded to concerns raised by Saikia, Saikia declined to give an opinion regarding India’s planned tour to Bangladesh which will consist of three T20Is and three ODIs between August 20 and September 2026. Bangladesh Cricket Board recently confirmed this series with India arriving in Dhaka on August 28, having originally scheduled it last year but being put off due to protests there.

Rahman’s IPL Career

Rahman was given permission by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to participate in IPL 2026, receiving an NOC to not play against New Zealand at home in the series. As such, his participation could ensure maximum enjoyment from IPL events.

Prior to 2025’s IPL season commencing, he appeared as a replacement player with Delhi Capitals for three games and took four wickets – this marked his IPL career total of 60 matches and 65 wickets across different franchises such as:

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • Mumbai Indians
  • Rajasthan Royals
  • Delhi Capitals
  • Chennai Super Kings

KKR’s Response and Next Steps

The co-owner of KKR Shah Rukh Khan and the franchise have been subject to a lot of public scrutiny since signing Rahman and demands for Rahman to be sacked grew louder in the last few days. The BCCI’s guidelines ensure that the team is in line with public opinion and allows KKR to keep an effective team by acquiring a replacement player if required.

This ruling highlights the growing influence of social-political factors on the selection of IPL teams and highlights the careful balance that franchises must follow to sign foreign-born players particularly from countries with diplomatic tensions.

Looking Ahead

For KKR the primary goal is choosing a new pacer, and ensuring that the team is balanced prior to IPL 2026. As the tournament draws near it is expected that franchises take care when navigating these obstacles in order to balance their expectations for performance and regulatory requirements. public expectations.

To Mustafizur Rahman this news implies that he’ll miss the forthcoming IPL season, however his IPL career is continuing to show his talents and contributions to Bangladesh’s most prominent fast bowlers.
