Air India has grounded one of its pilots after Canadian authorities flagged concerns about his fitness to operate a Vancouver–Delhi flight last month, the airline confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred on December 23, when the pilot was removed from Flight AI186 shortly before departure from Vancouver. According to Air India, the action followed concerns raised by Canadian officials regarding the crew member’s ability to safely perform his duties.
Sources familiar with the matter said Canada’s transport authorities later wrote to the airline, stating that two breathalyser tests conducted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police indicated the pilot was under the influence of alcohol and unfit to fly. While Air India did not comment on the alleged alcohol consumption, it confirmed that the pilot has been taken off flying duties pending a formal investigation.
“Flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi experienced a last-minute delay after one of the cockpit crew members was offloaded prior to departure,” Air India said in a statement. “Canadian authorities raised concerns regarding the pilot’s fitness for duty, following which the crew member was taken for further inquiry.”
To ensure passenger safety and comply with regulations, the airline arranged for an alternate pilot to operate the flight, which led to a delay.
Reiterating its stance on safety, Air India said it follows a zero-tolerance policy toward any breach of aviation rules. “Pending the outcome of the investigation, any confirmed violation will attract strict disciplinary action,” the airline added.
Transport Canada has asked Air India to conduct a detailed internal review under its Safety Management System and submit a report outlining corrective steps taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The airline has been asked to submit its findings and action plan by January 26.
The investigation remains ongoing.
