Doug Bracewell Retires From All Forms of Cricket After 18-Year Career

Former New Zealand all-rounder Doug Bracewell announced today his decision to leave all forms of cricket after 18 years of professional service to New Zealand and Central Districts Cricket Boards with pride and dedication. At 35, Bracewell will move on with pride knowing his career has come full circle.

Bracewell first made his first-class debut for Central Districts at just 18 years old in 2008. Before that, he played for New Zealand under-19 level cricket demonstrating early signs of potential as a fast bowling all-rounder. The progression was steady and in the year 2011 the youngster made his first international cap as a member of his club, the Black Caps.

Between the years 2011-2023, Bracewell played across the three formats of New Zealand. He played during the 28th Test, in 21ODIs as well as 20 T20Is playing both bat and ball when needed.

A single of his most significant moments in his career occurred quite early. In the 3rd Test game Bracewell put on an impressive Player-of-the-Match display in the match against Australia at Hobart. His performance all around contributed to New Zealand secure a dramatic seven-run win in a game that is still among the greatest victories in the history of the New Zealand team.

In the past, Bracewell struggled with a persistent injury to his ribs that kept him out of the upcoming home season. This injury was a significant reason for the decision to withdraw from the sport.

When reflecting on his experiences Bracewell described cricket as an important part of the life he led. He remarked that this was something that he imagined as a young boy, and expressed gratitude for the opportunities that the sport offered him. He also expressed his gratitude to his teammates as well as his coaches and other support personnel for supporting him throughout his professional career.

It is a privilege to be a part of first-class cricket and internationally-based cricket, Bracewell said he feels grateful to have played and loved the game for as long.

Doug Bracewell exits the sport as a well-known cricketer known for his fighting spirit important performances, as well as commitment towards New Zealand cricket.
