Shubman Gill is the present leader of India’s Test and OOD squads, and is not part of India’s squad for T20 World Cup 2026. On December 20, India’s Cricket Board (BCCI) officially revealed the squad.
During the 2025 Asia Cup and the series against Australia and South Africa, Shubman Gill served as vice captain for India’s T20 International team. Gill failed to qualify for the world championship final 15 despite his leadership role.
Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar Cites Runs and Team Combination
The chief selector of India Ajit Agarkar said Gill’s absence was caused by his recent performances and requirements for team combinations, instead of his overall performance as a player.
“We are aware of the top player Agarkar is, but perhaps the team has run out of some runs right now,” Agarkar said during the press conference.
The selector also said that selecting decisions are often difficult because of the small quantity of spots in the World Cup squad.
Combination Compulsions Play Key Role in Selection
Agarkar further explained Gill’s absence was due to tactical plan and balance in the team.
“It’s unfortunate that we didn’t get out at the previous World Cup as well because we played with various combinations. However, it’s the combination that matters the most,” he said.
According to Agarkar, in the event that only 15 players are picked there are some difficult decisions to be made. Gill was one of them who did not make it this time.
Suryakumar Yadav Dismisses Form Concerns
Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also addressed Gill’s exclusion and stated that it was not due to a poor performance.
“Post the T20 World Cup 2024, we traveled to Sri Lanka and scored 200 as well. Gill played in the group,” Suryakumar said.
The manager preferred to have a wicketkeeper to start the innings and other options for lower order, which affected the final lineup of the team.
Axar Patel Appointed India’s T20I Vice-Captain
With Gill not being part of the squad, the pickers have appointed the all-rounder Axar Patel to be India’s newest T20I vice-captain. Patel is also the captain of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League and is also the captain of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, will act as Suryakumar Yadav’s assistant.
“When Gill wasn’t playing many T20Is, Axar Patel was the vice-captain. It’s therefore normal for him to take on the role,” Agarkar said.
India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Squad:
Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel (Vice-Captain), Rinku Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan.
Gill’s decision to leave out the player has provoked controversy among fans, however selectors have reaffirmed they made the choice to ensure the team’s balance and strategy.
