A New Delhi bound Rajdhani Express derailed after colliding violently with an elephant herd located in Assam Nagaon District early Saturday morning, officials confirmed there were no injuries among passengers but eight elephants died due to this collision.
At 2:07 a.m. on December 20, an accident took place along the Lumding Division of Northeast Frontier Railway’s Jamunamukh-Kampur section when train number 20507 DN Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express began speeding through the night when its locomotive pilot observed elephants that were blocking tracks. After disengaging his emergency brakes to clear away momentum-based forces pushed its front carriage forward and into wildlife and metal debris maze that could only natively be cleared away by using its emergency brakes later removed but momentum had driven it further forward resulting in its destruction entanglement with both wildlife and metal components of five coaches becoming that could only locally disentangled itself due to momentum caused by momentum-control that had taken place earlier whereas its pilot saw elephants blocking tracks which forced it forward until stopping suddenly before finally stopping abruptly due to wildlife encountering metal components disengaged then all five coaches into a complex jungle of wildlife/metal components becoming trapped between itself and wildlife.
Scene and Passenger Accounts
The crash occurred 126 km northeast of Guwahati in an unclassified region; when dawn broke teams of rescuers raced to clear debris while also ascertaining damage assessments; tracks were closed temporarily but service was resumed by midday due to backup engines providing backup service for these tracks.
“Our train shook like an earthquake before being tossed off its tracks,” recalls Kolkata passenger Priya Singh who witnessed shadows of elephants passing before everything turned upside down. Videos taken by riders showed bloodied tracks and bent coaches — yet miraculously no injuries occurred!
Official Response and Railway Statement
Railroad authorities have applauded the pilot’s swift actions following an accident involving their train, noting “emergency brakes were immediately applied preventing further damage” as stated by Rina Kalita of Northeast Frontier Railway. All 800+ passengers aboard safely transported to relief trains while compensation will be considered after assessment from forest department personnel.
Conservation Concerns and Context
Its Environmentalists have strongly condemned Assam for failing to take effective steps against elephant deaths caused by habitat pressure; As a result, “elephants roam these paths all night long due to habitat pressure”, noted Nagaon-based activist Ravi Das. In Assam alone there have been at least fifty elephant deaths over five years due to train wheels running over wildlife-prone zones without paying sufficient heed; undesignated corridors increase this risk significantly as speeding trains drive by without regard for wildlife areas susceptible zones where trains must pass over wildlife-sensitive zones towards potential risks such as these areas that require immediate consideration when speeding trains pass over wildlife that areas prone for them!
Forest officials arrived quickly and confirmed eight deaths among a herd that was migrating from nearby hills, including calves. Post mortems were conducted to ascertain any presence of disease before carcasses were dumped so as to deter potential scavengers from eating their bodies.
Investigation and Future Measures
Although the train collision was of great severity, authorities reported no injuries or deaths among passengers or railway employees as a result of it. Reports state that after seeing elephants on the railway track, the locomotive driver managed to engage the emergency brakes before it hit them; but some elephants still ran into it and collided.
