Mumbai Police Detain Three Linked to Delhi Blast Case

The Mumbai Police have picked up three people who are believed to be connected to the main accused in the Delhi car blast incident. Officials said on Tuesday that all three will be taken to Delhi for deeper questioning.

According to police sources, these individuals were detained from different areas in a quiet, well-planned operation by a special Mumbai Police team. They are now being questioned to understand their role in the case. Officers also mentioned that the detained persons come from financially stable families, similar to the key accused Dr. Umar Muhammad and Dr. Muzammil.

Meanwhile, similar searches and checks are being done in multiple districts across Maharashtra.

A day earlier, investigators revealed that they had recovered encrypted chats and evidence of weapon movement that suggested a tightly controlled inner circle within the terror network led by Dr. Umar. Umar, who was driving the i20 car that exploded near Delhi’s Red Fort and killed at least 13 people, had created a secret Signal group three months ago. The group had a coded name to avoid detection, and included Muzammil, Adil Rather, Muzaffar Rather and Maulvi Irfan Ahmad.

The investigation took a major turn when police found an assault rifle and a pistol in the car of another accused, Dr. Shaheen Shahid. Officials believe Umar arranged these weapons and gave them to Irfan sometime in 2024. Shaheen had earlier seen the same weapons in Irfan’s room along with Muzammil. Police suspect that Shaheen might have contributed the largest share of funds used by the group.

Evidence gathered so far shows that the module operated with a proper hierarchy. The three doctors mainly handled the finances, with Muzammil playing a major role. Irfan, on the other hand, was responsible for recruiting Kashmiri youths. Two of those recruits – Arif Nisar Dar, also known as Sahil, and Yasir ul Ashraf – have already been arrested.

Investigators have also tracked several movements of weapons. In October 2023, Umar and Adil visited Irfan at a mosque in Kashmir, carrying a rifle hidden in a bag. They cleaned the weapon before leaving. A month later, Adil again went to Irfan’s home with a rifle. Muzammil and Shaheen also arrived the same day. The weapon stayed with Irfan overnight, and Adil collected it the next morning.

According to officials, the group worked like a coordinated network, using encrypted apps, organised fundraising, targeted recruitment, and careful handling of weapons.

The module is connected to the Faridabad terror network that was exposed on November 9, when police found 2,900 kg of explosives and ammunition in rented rooms linked to Muzammil, a doctor from Al Falah University. Umar, another doctor from the same university, was driving the car that exploded near the Red Fort on November 10. Since then, authorities have been tightening their search for everyone involved.

Further investigation is ongoing.
